According to data from China Railway Group, the number of China-Europe Railway Express trains opened in April reached 979, a year-on-year increase of 46%. In May, the cumulative number of trips exceeded 1,000, reaching 1,033, a year-on-year increase of 43%. Among them, 93,000 TEUs of goods were sent in May, an increase of 48% year-on-year, and the number of rows and shipments in a single month reached a record high.
In addition to the increase in the number of trips and the number of transportation materials, the trains have also continued to innovate their operating methods during the epidemic. On June 4th, the container shipping from Japan via Lianyungang and the train to Mongolia realized seamless docking, which shortened the time by 4 days and became an effective combination of shipping and train.
Regarding the eye-catching performance of the China-Europe Railway Express during the epidemic, Russian Commercial Representative in China Sergey Inyushin emphasized that during the epidemic, at the worst moments, everyone strictly abide by the home order, although the consumption of energy products has decreased. But food consumption is increasing, which has become a source of power for train transportation.
A cargo owner of Yiwu small commodities told China Business News that the freight train is similar to a shuttle bus, and the freight is lower than air-shipping, and the journey is shorter than vessel-shipping. "The same batch of small commodities shipped to Madrid, Spain, saves more than 60% of the time by taking the China-Europe Railway Express, and reduces the transportation cost by nearly 30%, which greatly increases the added value of export products." 10 days faster, 20~30 days less than sea freight.
The China-Europe Railway Express (Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe) Budapest direct train has realized normal operation.
Yang Jie, senior coordinator of international affairs at the Asia-Europe Land Bridge and International Railway Service Center of the China Communications and Transportation Association, reviewed the rapid outbreak of China-Europe Railway Express during the epidemic in an interview with a reporter from China Business News. Late January 2020 coincides with the Chinese New Year holiday and another outbreak of the epidemic. This superimposed impact, as well as the subsequent epidemic prevention measures and reduced shipments, has caused shipping companies and airlines to take measures such as abolishing capacity and canceling them. There are a large number of sea and air routes between China and Europe. On the other hand, from February to mid-March, foreign manufacturers rely heavily on inventory and the rationing and supply of "bottleneck" parts.
Due to the relatively minor impact of the epidemic on international rail freight between China and Europe, coupled with the fast timeliness of train transportation and the flexibility and convenience of reaching European inland countries, as the main domestic China-Europe Railway Express train lines gradually resumed operations in early February, some of the backlogs of exports since the Spring Festival With the shortage of shipping and air freight, orders began to be exported to Europe and Russia, and the role of the China-Europe Railway Express began to appear.
It is worth noting that when the trains are constantly traveling between China and Europe, there is also a trend of diversification in transportation or return materials. “After the gradual resumption of work in China at the beginning of February, the China-Europe Railway Express has undertaken the task of transporting epidemic prevention materials and daily necessities when the sea and air transport capacity between China and Europe has been affected.” Yang Jie said, “This is to help the global war against the epidemic. It provides strong support to ensure the stability and smooth flow of the international supply chain and promote the steady development of China’s foreign trade industry."
According to incomplete statistics from a reporter from China Business News, between April and June, the China-Europe Railway Express trains were launched for the first shipment of medical and anti-epidemic supplies in Germany, Serbia, France, and Poland.
In addition, Yang Jie pointed out that some localities have increased their support this year, using China-Europe Railway Express as an indicator of supporting measures to resume work and production, such as Chongqing, Shandong, Chengdu, Xi'an, and other places. Among them, Shandong, Xi'an and other places strive to achieve breakthroughs in the number of lines opened throughout the year. In Yang Jie's view, the logistics support policies introduced in early March this year to restore the economy affected by the epidemic, such as the exemption of expressway tolls at this stage, have also brought a certain stimulus to the export sources of trains.
